Peel back the curtains of The Tasmanian Pourer Explorer

Created through neccessity

The Tasmanian Pourer Explorer was born from the desire to fill a void: no one had created a single, easy‑to‑use directory that brought together Tasmania’s breweries, distilleries, and wineries. The information was scattered, incomplete, or outdated. Some sites did fill in some of the gaps, but it wasn't enough.

At its core, the site is driven by a passion for both Tasmania and exploration. The goal is to make it easier to uncover what we have to offer, its aim is to provide information to assist that discovery and help connect creators and explorers.

The scale of the project naturally grew overtime. First devised as a simple spreadsheet for tracking distilleries, it soon encompassed the whole range of the industry. It later took on the form as a tourism resource, to help people connect with a vibrant and core industry, valuable to Tasmania.

I hope readers find this site useful. Get out there and explore!

Tasmania's Alcohol Industry

Tasmanians have been experimenting with fermentation for thousands of years. Aboriginal people initially used the sap of cider gum tree to create a sort of wine that naturally fermented with bacteria and yeast.

In the early-19th century when Tasmania was colonised, early settlers and prisoners brewed rough, improvised drinks using whatever ingredients they could get their hands on. With some luck and a fermentable source, turning most liquids into alcohol seemed possible! As Tasmania grew, so did production. However, in the mid‑1800's, a ban was imposed on commercial spirit production, a decision that halted legal distilling for around 70 years. Even once the prohibition was overturned in the early 20th century, poor economic viability made starting up far from appealing. Luckily, beer and wine were unaffected.

Today, Tasmania is experiencing a modern renaissance. With spirit production ramping back up in early 90's and Tasmania experiencing a boom in wine and craft beer production since the mid 00's, our industry continues to grow with a new producer seemingly popping up every week. We have become known for our mastery of the craft, with wineries, breweries and distilleries shining on the world stage.

Along with the awesome, passionate people in the industry, our home is host to the cleanest, purest climate on earth creating the ideal conditions for creating unmistakably amazing products. Let's keep it this way. We all have a responsibility to look after our environment for future generations to enjoy too. Cheers!

About the Creator

Nathan R.

I'm a Hobartian perhaps a little too obsessed with all things boozy. If not at the local, I'm up in The Abels.

My background is in food science. I hold Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition Science, and have worked in several roles across the industry from managing production to quality assurance. I currently work for a couple of local distilleries in Hobart doing all sorts of fun things.

Making a website dedicated to our drinks industry has been a passion project, learning curve and great experience. I'm always churning with new ideas to add.

I love Tassie. We are lucky to live in the best place on earth, and I yearn to see our little island thrive and grow. I hope this site can contribute to that in some way!
